According to a report released by the Forest and Environment Department of the Government of India, 78 lakh 29 thousand sq.ft. Hectare is under forest and 23.81 per cent of the total land area of India is under forest. Considering 28 States and Union Territories of India, deforestation has been reduced in some states and deforestation has been increased in others.

State with the largest forest size -
Madhya Pradesh has the highest forest cover in India (94,689 sq km) followed by Andhra Pradesh (63,814 sq km) and Maharashtra (61,939 sq km).
Lowest forested state -
The state of Haryana has the lowest forest cover and only 3.53% of the land in Haryana is under forest. It is followed by Punjab (6.12%) and Bihar (6.87%).
State with high forest area
Sikkim (82.31%) has the highest forest cover in terms of area. It is followed by Mizoram (79.30%) and Manipur (78.01%). Lakshadweep Island has the most forests in the Union Territory.
